Situated on a basalt rock, the Rupea Fortress, a monument of nature is dated 2000 years back being adjusted and improved along the time. The now days ruins are organized in 3 sections:

- the upper fortress is the oldest construction most probably being built on an old Dacian site, Ramidava. The entry into the upper fortress was accessible from a very narrow passage, as small as a man's width.

- the middle fortress was raised during the XV-th century and extended in the beginning of the XVII-th century. The Chapel and the Scout's Tower were built here.

- the lower fortress (XVIII-th century) comprises the most recent extensions, amongst which the Bacon Tower, a feature of the Saxon communities. A 59 meters deep fountain is also found here, still full of water.

The peculiarities of the Rupea Fortress reside in the snail shape of the fortifications and the Pentagonal Tower. The fortress belonged to the invasion signaling system, thus contributing to protect Sighisoara, an important trade center of Transylvania.
